The Washington Inn & Tavern Company Information
General information
The hotel property was first deeded in October 1751 to a John Bell, who reportedly paid 40 shillings for two lots. By 1780, there was a tavern. Henry E.L. Morris and his wife, Margaret, owned the hotel between 1856 and 1858, and are believed to have named the hotel for George Washington, more than 50 years after his death.
Douglas Wallop owned the property as an investment in the 1930s or 1940s, and the most recent owners were the Murphey family, with three generations operating and owning it.
It has been much extended and altered over the years with the original building reputedly erected in 1744, onto which was added the dining room to the rear, two further small extensions and in 1900 the large rectangular addition on the side.
