Circle K’s success in the convenience retailing industry spans more than 60 years. Our roots trace back to 1951 when Fred Hervey purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso, Texas. Later, he grew the Circle K chain into neighboring New Mexico and Arizona.

During the next few decades, Circle K grew its retail network through a series of acquisitions, which were incorporated into the Circle K brand. By 1975, there were 1,000 Circle K stores across the US. In 1979, Circle K entered the international market when a licensing agreement established the first Circle K stores in Japan. The company’s growth continued and by 1984 sales had reached $1 billion.

Circle K has become one of the most widely recognized convenience store brands, known worldwide for quality products and great customer service. We have come a long way since our humble beginnings, and we’re proud of where we’ve been and where we’re going.

In 2003 Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (Couche Tard) became the parent company of Circle K. Couche Tard is the leader in the Canadian convenience store industry. In North America, we are the largest independent convenience store operator (whether integrated with a petroleum company or not) in terms of number of company-operated stores. Couche-Tard’s network is comprised of 5,795 convenience stores, 4,128 of which include motor fuel dispensing, operated by 13 business units, including nine in the United States covering 43 states and the District of Columbia, and four in Canada covering all ten provinces. More than 53,000 people are employed throughout Couche-Tard’s retail convenience network and service centers.

Circle K also carries a wide range of products and services which include beer, snacks, candy, ATMs, mobile prepaid wireless phones, gift cards, money orders, and general merchandise. Many Circle K locations also sell quality branded fuels including Shell, BP, Marathon and Irving Oil.
