General information

The Institute of People Management (IPM) is the largest professional membership body for Human Resources in southern Africa.

Since our inception in 1945, we have been enhancing the competence of HR Professionals. IPM has and continues to play a key role in professionalizing and credentialing HR within South Africa and on the wider continent.

We’re the founding member of the African Human Resource Confederation (AHRC), the AU of Human Resources. Through our membership of the AHRC, we are affiliated to the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA). We are also a sister organisation to HR professional bodies across the globe, such as the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) in USA, the Chartered Institute of People Development (CIPD) in UK and the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) in Australia. We consistently leverage global networks for the benefit of members.

What we do

Membership

Our package of membership benefits and services is designed to equip HR professionals with the strategic thinking and practical tools they need to influence and have impact within the workplace.
IPM offers professional, non-professional, individual and corporate membership options.
Membership Benefits include a monthly print copy of our journal, People Dynamics, online access to leading electronic journals and discounts on our suite of IPM Programmes and Events including our flagship Annual Convention and Exhibition. We also have a mentoring programme that members can access and a variety of online communities and forums that we are establishing.
Professional Membership is assessed and you are awarded a professional designation that signals to industry your level of professional competence. You can use this designation after your name. You are also listed on the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) website alongside other designated professionals.
Professional levels of membership confer the IPM Professional Designations, as follows:

• Associate Member – IPM Ass
• Senior Associate Member - IPMS Ass
• Professional Member – IPMP
• Senior Professional Member - IPMSP
• Executive Professional Member - IPMEP
• Fellow – IPMF

The non-professional membership levels are (these categories of membership do not carry with them any professional designations or letters you can use after your name):

• Affiliate Member
• Student Member
