Panimomestari William Gideon Åberg ja rouvansa Onni perustivat juoppouden poistamiseksi panimon Iisalmeen vuonna 1878. Zacharias Topeliuksen hengessä he halusivat tarjota miedompia vaihtoehtoja viinanhimon villitsemille kansalaisille. Tuolloin Suomessa toimi noin 78 panimoa.
Itsenäisenä suomalaisena niistä on säilynyt ainoastaan Olvi.
