Benford G K & Co Company Information

General information

About our Firewood Logs
Suitable incoming tree waste is processed into firewood logs, which we sell retail. The logs are made from a variety of hardwoods, and some Scotʼs Pine, and stored under cover. The logs are in random lengths up to 33 cm (13 inches). If you need shorter logs, please specify when ordering.
Logs are offered in two grades ʻseasonedʼ and ʻunseasonedʼ. In October 2013 we installed a Lauber drying system (www.lauber-holztrockner.de) which is powered by a biomass boiler. This enables us to be confident that the seasoned logs are < 25% moisture. The unseasoned are air dried to less than < 50%, even at the end of the winter. If you have an enclosed log burning stove you need seasoned grade logs, while unseasoned are suitable for most open fires. Our seasoned logs could accurately be described as Kiln Dried or Force Dried.
Customers in receipt of Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI) payments need to obtain their fuel supplies from sources listed on the official Biomass Suppliers List (BSL). We have been approved and audited and gained a place on the BSL. Our authorisation numbers are 6841 – 0003 for unseasoned and 6841 – 0004 for seasoned (force dried) logs. To be authorised we needed to meet a lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target of 34.8g CO2. Our rating is 5.1.
Delivery
Delivery is included within 15 miles of Odiham, and is available 6 days a week, using our Suzuki Carry pickup. Each delivery includes a free bag of kindling, which will have been dried. For your peace of mind we offer ʻtailboard rejectionʼ; you can inspect the load before it is unloaded, and if you are not happy with it, weʼll take it away again, for no charge.
In addition to our venerable Suzuki Carry pick-up, we now have a Fiat Doblo Workup. The Doblo has exactly double the capacity of the Suzuki. This gives us the possibility to deliver two loads in one journey, and to offer a discount on ‘double’ loads.

About Green waste Recycling

Our site is set up to receive only the following waste types, determined by the plant and equipment on site and the permit and exemptions granted by the Environment Agency. The 6 digit references are the EWC codes.
02 01 03 Plant tissue waste. This covers most of the biodegradable arisings from domestic gardens. Not including tree stumps > 30 cm across.
02 01 07 Wastes from forestry (comprising wood and plant tissue). This covers the waste arising from woodland operations, felling, thinning, pruning, etc. Not including tree stumps > 30 cm across.
03 01 05 Sawdust and shavings, from untreated wood from joinery shops.
15 01 03 Grade A waste wood, e.g. untreated pallets and packaging.
19 12 01 Paper and cardboard not containing non-biodegradable elements.
17 02 01 Grade C waste wood, i.e. fence panels and decking, free of metal components other than nails. We do not take and MDF, plywood, melamine faced chipboard, etc.
20 02 01 Biodegradable waste. This is similar to 02 01 03, but where the source is ‘municipal’ i.e. any commercial or public premises.
All of which we recycle to make useful products. The Environment Agency have granted us permit for the composting (permit number EPR/QP3190VU), and a T6 exemption for the wood fuel production.
The facility is popular with local landscape contractors and tree surgeons, who need somewhere to tip at the end of each job. However we also welcome larger consignments from waste transfer stations and site clearance jobs. The incoming waste is either shredded or chipped on site to produce compost for use on our farm, or biomass woodchip for sale.
Access to the tipping area is by a swipe card operated barrier, so that, once on our system, customers can tip at any time.

Hay and straw
We normally have stocks of meadow hay, wheat straw and barley straw in conventional bales.
The bales weigh around 20kg each and are designed for manual handling.
Most customers collect, but delivery can be arranged. At harvest (July/August) the bales can be cheaper if collected from the field.
We have labour and machinery to load any size truck.
