The College of St Barnabas Company Information

General information

While visiting the south coast, Canon William Cooper and a friend discovered dozens of retired priests, without any income, living in Workhouses. He was determined to do something, and set about the task of founding a new community, of which he was to become the first Warden. The College was originally named “The Homes of St Barnabas” and based in Dormans Park, Surrey, but moved to its present location adjacent to Dormans Station in 1900.

Residents of the College benefit from the security of knowing that their home is assured, no matter what their economic situation. No one is prevented from becoming or remaining a resident through lack of means.

Accommodation at the College is comprised of The Cloister Flats (accommodation for eight couples and twenty single people, each with a sitting room, bedroom and private bathroom) and the Nursing Wing (run by our Matron and staffed by her team of Nursing Sisters and Carers, giving the opportunity for most residents to remain at the College for the rest of their lives). The College also offers respite care in a place of quietness and spiritual peace. Residents can take advantage of three Libraries and a common room which is the meeting place of the Theology Group, Art Group, Poetry Group and the monthly “Music to the Ears” sessions.

The daily offering of prayer is one of the principal elements that gives the College its special quality. There are two Chapels at the College. The Upper Chapel seats 60 people and is laid out in the traditional collegiate pattern. The Lowe Chapel has no steps to enable Priests to continue to celebrate the Eucharist for as long as they wish and are able to do so.

Groups are welcomed for structured or informal quiet days, to gather for prayer and discernment at times when important decisions must be made, or simply to enjoy peace and space together. Visits can be arranged by using this form http://www.st-barnabas.org.uk/contact/information/.
