The Friends of Summerhill

Summerhill Bowling Club is a friendly oasis in the heart of Newcastle, just five minutes’ walk from Central Station. Tucked away at the top of Summerhill Square, it comprises two championship-size bowling greens and a recently renovated clubhouse, both now available to hire for private and community use.

After more than 90 years of use as a private members bowling club, in 2011, the Club's ownership was transferred to The Friends of Summerhill, a registered charity, and essential renovation works were carried out with a grant from Newcastle City Council.

The Club needs further improvements, which will be made as funds become available. It retains many of its original features and is a nostalgic but fun venue for parties and community activities. During the Summer season bowling equipment is available for hire, and is regularly made available for community use at open events.

The Friends of Summerhill aims to develop the greens and former clubhouse and is responsible for their maintenance. The Friends is a membership organisation, open to everyone for an annual fee of just £1. Membership gives access to discounted rates on Club hire, and the opportunity to help shape the future of the venue.
