1996 upptog UNESCO Gammelstads kyrkstad på listan över världsarv omistliga för mänskligheten.
Gammelstads kyrkstad är idag världens största och bäst bevarade kyrkstad med mer än 400 kyrkstugor grupperade kring Norrlands största medeltida stenkyrka.
UNESCO added Gammelstad Church Town to its world heritage list in 1996 - motivated by it's outstanding universal value and it's relevance to all mankind.
The site is the world's most extensive and best preserved example of a church town, with more than 400 church cottages gathered around northern Sweden's largest medieval stone church.
