正式には、「賀茂御祖神社（かもみおやじんじゃ）」とよびます。
京都は鴨川を中心に町づくりがなされており、鴨川の下流にまつられている
お社というところから「下鴨（しもがも）さん」とか「下鴨神社（しもがも）」と親しくよばれています。東西の二殿の本殿はともに国宝です。
Ufficialmente si chiama il santuario scintoista di Kamomioya. Ma è chiamato comunemente il santuario di Shimogamo o "Shimogamo san” per simpatia. Significa il santuario si trova al delta che costeggia il corso inferiore (shimo) del fiume Kamogawa. I santuari principali sono i patrimoni nazionali.
