General information

聯合書院於1956年由廣僑、光夏、華僑、文化等書院及平正會計專科學校五所專上學院合併組成。1957年，聯合書院依據香港政府法案成立校董會，全力發展院務。1963年，香港中文大學成立，聯合書院為其創校成員書院之一。

1963年，聯合書院在社會各界人士踴躍捐助下成立書院基金，為書院的發展及學生活動推廣，提供了一個重要的財政來源。1971年12月，聯合書院遷到沙田校舍現址。

聯合書院秉承「明德新民」校訓，通過全人教育及群體生活，提升學生的品德情操，為香港社會、中國以至全人類服務。因此書院素來特別著重研究香港問題，目的是希望透過理論的傳授和實習，為香港培養更多優秀人才。歷年來，聯合書院畢業生在香港政治、經濟、社會與文化方面貢獻良多。

聯合書院每年均舉辦「到訪傑出學人講座」、「周年研討會」及「書院聚書」等活動，以增加教員和同學接觸不同種類知識的機會。1985年，聯合書院成立天機微型計算機室，為推廣電算機及資訊科技教育之先驅。1995年，聯合書院又成立香港中文大學蔡冠深通識教育資源中心。另外，為了提高同學的英文和普通話的語文能力，書院自1996年起開辦「語文改善計劃」課程。GEUC4011《專題研究》為書院畢業班本科生的必修通識課程，研究顧問計劃每年招募大學研究生，以一比一配對老師，協助學生小組進行跨學科研究的策劃和執行。

書院一向著重全人教育及發展，特別重視擴闊學生的視野和培養他們對社會的責任感。書院每年都舉辦不同類型的計劃和活動，鼓勵學生透過參與，以達到個人學習和成長的目的。這些計劃包括岑才生學長計劃、權智創新及創業獎勵計劃、領袖訓練、社會服務及獎勵、國際演講會、有機耕種及環境保護、戲劇、演辯、健康系列、文化藝術活動、學生會組織及興趣小組等，讓學生有更多機會發展潛能。

聯合書院與澳洲蒙納許大學、澳洲南澳大學、北京大學、日本關西大學、日本創價大學、韓國高麗大學、韓國釜山大學、韓國成均館大學、紐西蘭懷卡託大學、新加坡南洋理工大學、國立臺灣大學、芬蘭奧倫大學、法國里爾天主教大學、意大利卡羅卡塔內奧大學、挪威卑爾根大學、西班牙龐培法布拉大學、瑞典哥德堡大學、瑞士洛桑大學、英國艾塞克斯大學、英國格拉斯哥大學、加拿大多倫多大學(密西沙加分校)、美國東北大學美國伊利諾伊大學厄巴納香檳分校、美國馬薩諸塞大學(阿默斯特分校)及美國南卡羅來納大學成立交換計劃，每年互相交換學生，促進文化交流。書院近年更積極協助學生到外地交流學習，成立聯合書院邁向地球村計劃，以配合全球化及多元文化校園的趨勢。學生可獲獎學金資助，參加海外交換或交流計劃、專題考察計劃、語言及文化學習營等，與來自內地及世界各地的年輕人一起學習。另學生亦可透過此類獎學金，參與由學系舉辦的海外實習或自行選擇有學分的海外大學短期課程。此外，書院於2013至2014年度起增設服務體驗實習計劃，學生會被安排到位於臺灣、泰國或緬甸的非牟利機構，參與不同形式的服務計劃，與當地經驗豐富的義工一同深入了解不同國家的生活及文化。

聯合書院設有多項獎學金及學業優異獎計劃，獎勵學業、體育與課外活動成績優異的同學前往海外學習，又設獎學金資助畢業生到外國深造。書院另成立校內及校外住宿助學金，援助有需要的聯合學生，鼓勵他們積極參與書院活動，並爭取學習時間提升學業成績。聯合書院在2016至2017年度所頒發之獎學金、獎勵計劃及經濟援助總額逾一千萬港元，獎額逾二千八百多項。

此外，聯合書院亦致力推廣德育，設立「岑維休先生德育計劃」，推動學生德育活動，以提升學生的道德水平。 為鼓勵同學積極服務社會，恪守明德新民的校訓，以深化立人達人的精神，書院計劃推行全面性的社會服務計劃，讓同學參與社會服務，發展個人潛能，貢獻社會。

書院校園風景優美，展示了眾多著名藝術家的作品供人觀賞。書院的校園亦不斷擴建，現時四座學生宿舍合共為同學提供一千二百八十八個宿位，書院正籌備興建第五所學生宿舍。此外，「思源文娛中心」內有酒吧及兩個活動室，供大學師生及校友使用。「思源廣場」則為書院提供一所可容納三百五十人之戶外表演場地。

United College was founded in 1956 through the amalgamation of five colleges: Canton Overseas, Kwang Hsia, Wah Kiu, Wen Hua and the Ping Jing College of Accountancy. In 1957, United College was incorporated under an ordinance with a board of trustees as its governing body, and in 1963 became one of the founding colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

With generous donations from the Hong Kong community, the College established an endowment fund in 1963 as an essential source of funding for student services and further development. In December 1971, it moved to its present campus in Shatin.

In living up to its motto, “Make One’s Virtues Shine and Renew the People”, United College strives to serve the people of Hong Kong, mainland China and the world through integrative education, pastoral care, and the moral and spiritual enhancement of our students. We place strong emphasis on the issues facing Hong Kong and the development of our community’s future leaders. Many United College graduates have gone on to distinguished careers in Hong Kong’s political, economic, social and cultural arenas.

United College places strong emphasis on whole-person education, broadening the perspective of its students and enhancing their sense of social responsibility. Our Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lectures, Annual Workshop and College Assemblies provide intellectual stimuli to both students and staff. We established the Tien Chi Microcomputer Laboratory, then the first of its kind on the University campus, in 1985 and the Choi Koon Shum General Education Resource Centre in 1995. The College has offered a ‘Language Improvement Project’ since 1996 to strengthen students’ language skills. The Graduate Research Consultant Scheme was established to assist student groups, in planning and conducting multidisciplinary research for the College’s compulsory General Education course of GEUC4011 ‘Senior Seminar’, in their final year of studies. University postgraduate students are recruited as Graduate Research Consultants every year, and they will support the course supervisors on a one-to-one basis.

A wide range of activities, including the Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme, the Group Sense Innovation and Entrepreneurial Project Award Programme, leadership training, social services and incentive schemes, the United College Toastmasters Club, organic farming and environmental protection, drama, debates, health programmes, arts and cultural activities, Student Union and student interest groups, are organised throughout the year. Through participation in these activities, students develop and improve their personal and social qualities.

The College has established exchange programmes with Monash University and University of South Australia in Australia, Peking University in China, Kansai University and Soka University in Japan, Korea University, Pusan National University and Sung Kyun Kwan University in Korea, University of Waikato in New Zealand, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, National Taiwan University in Taiwan, University of Oulu in Finland, Université Catholique de Lille in France, Universita Carlo Cattaneo (LIUC) in Italy, University of Bergen in Norway, Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain, University of Gothenburg in Sweden, University of Essex and University of Glasgow in United Kingdom, University of Toronto (Mississauga) in Canada, Northeastern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Massachusetts (Amherst), University of South Carolina in the USA. To keep pace with globalisation, the College also organises numerous exchange activities under the Globe-Oriented Active Learning (GOAL) programme. The GOAL programme has many avenues for students to take part in overseas study tours and exchange programmes that encourage them to live and interact with people from different parts of the world. Students can also make use of GOAL scholarships to participate in overseas internships or attend the credit-bearing, short-term courses offered by overseas universities. The Service Learning Internship Programme (SLIP) has been set up since 2013-2014. SLIP provides internship opportunities for students in NGOs in Thailand, Myanmar and Taiwan.

The College offers a wide range of scholarships and awards for students who achieve outstanding performance in academic studies, sport and extracurricular activities. Scholarships are also available to allow eligible students to pursue postgraduate studies overseas. To encourage students with financial difficulties to actively participate in college activities while studying, the College has offered Hostel Residence Grant and Off-campus Residence Grant to provide subsidies to needy students for hostel fees or off-campus rental. In 2016-2017, the total value of the College’s scholarships, awards and financial aid is over HK$10 million, with over 2,800 awards granted.

The College also promotes moral education through the Mr Shum Wai Yau Moral Education Scheme. To reinforce the College motto on ‘Xin Min’ and nurture students to help those in need, the College will launch a comprehensive social service programme. The programme provides students with various opportunities to engage in social service activities, and encourage them to participate in social service.

United College is situated on a beautiful campus graced by a cascade and artworks by celebrated artists. The College has expanded considerably in the past few years. At present, its four student hostels can accommodate 1,288 students. The College is planning to build the fifith student hostel on campus. The Si Yuan Amenities Centre, equipped with a pub and two function rooms, is open to students, staff and alumni of the University. The Si Yuan Amphitheatre is an ideal venue for outdoor cultural activities and performance for up to 350 people.
