福建农林大学东方学院是2002年由福建农林大学申办，2003年底经教育部首批批准为实施全日制本科教育的独立学院。目前有工、经、管、文、法、农6大学科门类，设有经济系、管理系、会计系、计算机系、人文艺术系、外语系等6个系，20个专业（含专业方向）。2005年，教育部专家组对全国独立学院进行专项评估，认为是“办学理念先进、教学特色鲜明、社会信誉良好、发展前景广阔”的独立学院。同时，中国校友会网等机构公布2010年中国独立学院排行榜，我院为全国第84名。
